Canada going for fifth

Canada will be playing for fifth place at the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation junior women's volleyball championship.

Canada, represented by the Brandon Tri-Star Storm of Manitoba, lost its quarter-final match against the Dominican Republic 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 on Thursday.

Canada also lost its round-robin encounter to the Dominican Republic, in four sets.

``It was quite an experience to play the Dominicans again,'' right side Samantha Hutcheson said in a statement. ``This time we knew what to expect from them and we came out playing hard and showed a lot of passion. We fought for every point. If we can leave here with fifth place it'll be a big success.''

``We battled hard but we couldn't get any runs going,'' added Canada's head coach Derek Richels. ``We had trouble with our serving game but everything else was pretty solid.``Their ability to play with these teams has been pretty impressive. They believed from the start that they could compete and have shown that this week.''

Meaghan Robertson led the Canadian attack with 12 points, including nine on spikes. Lisa Barclay had seven while Erika Buchanan added six.

Canada was set to play the loser of the Mexico-Puerto Rico quarter-final held later Thursday night.
